IPL 2023: Shane Watson, Assistant Coach at DC, says we must use our bat skills for longer periods of time

Shane Watson, the Delhi Capitals' assistant coach, believes that the team's inability to consistently use its batting talents has been its downfall this season, contributing to its seven losses out of its first 11 IPL games.

With just three games remaining, DC, who are now lowest in the standings and have four victories thus far, are almost eliminated from play-off contention.

On Wednesday, DC dominated the home team for the most of their bowling effort before falling to Chennai Super Kings by 27 runs.

IPL 2023: Matheesha Pathirana and MS Dhoni lead Chennai Super Kings to a 27-run victory against Delhi Capitals in a low-scoring match.

Prior to holding DC to 140/8 in their 20 overs, CSK recorded a total of 167/8.

When discussing the match, Watson said: “We need to figure out how to use our bat skills for a longer length of time. We can have strong batting performances if we can do it, as we have at various tournament levels.

He said that on a track with turns, 167/8 was considered a par score by those in the DC dugout.

“We believed that 167 was a reasonable total in Chennai on the surface. It was crucial for us to start strong, but regrettably we were unable to accomplish so. Additionally, after losing three wickets in the powerplay, it was difficult for us to recover.

According to the former Australian all-rounder, the early sacking of captain David Warner also played a significant role.

“Against RCB, everything worked pretty nicely. Unfortunately, Davey (Warner) failed to complete the opening over. Then, we also lost Mitchell Marsh and Phil Salt. Therefore, CSK just lost out as a result of events.

Watson said, “We've got to just keep working on getting better,” when asked what the squad needed to concentrate on for the future games. For the majority of CSK's innings, we bowled the ball well.

On May 13, DC will play Punjab Kings in their next game at the Kotla.
